Major Inspections
Paragraph 7.3.5 in AS 2550.1-2011 describes a Major Inspection and defines the circumstances in which these should be carried out by a suitably competent person.
Unless the remaining Design Working Period (DWP) or safe working life, is explicitly known a Major Inspection is due after two-thirds of the design life specified by the manufacturer or the original design Standard or, where this is unknown after 7 years of use.
A Major Inspection is also required when an old crane is to be recommissioned and previous operating records do not exist or the Standard to which it was designed and built is unknown.
